by George Raft, as a vigilant, truthful detective and also by Van Heflin, Ginger Rogers, and Gene Tierney. The story is interesting with many twists and turns. The pacing of the film, unfortunately, is slow and even plodding. Still, it is a worthwhile, little-remembered film and I was glad to watch it here on Archives.

Misleading title
I gave it two stars just happy to see George Raft as a policeman. Thank you anyway for making the film available but it won’t be on my repeat list.
Great film! “Wise owl, how many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop?” This one just keeps on going! But as a huge Gene Tierney

fan, I thought this role a non-starter for her incredible talent. Ginger Rogers was cast perfectly, but I’m biased there. Great dancer, but believable character actress not-so-much, this loud, brassy role seems custom made for her. Van Heflin, and most of the cast right on too. I’d more enjoy Otto Krueger as Lottie’s husband, not best cast as uncle. Likely he had too much natural presence, but is a more likely attractive older man. But for a purpose girl that might not matter. Actor who played “Mr. Lottie Marin” would have been perfect cast as uncle. Less than than spot-on casting seems to have kept this movie from the accolades it deserves. Engaging every time I see it. Always worth the time. True marks of a really good film.
