A bartender (Matthew Modine) captivates a stingy customer (Martin Landau) with the saga of two rival mob families who go to war after one of their children is stiffed on a tip.
Despite a clever script, a solid cast of familiar names and faces, award-winning editing (at the Seattle Film Festival), an absolutely glowing review from Variety, and hopes for Academy Award nominations, Very Mean Men fell into total obscurity after playing a few festivals, attaining only one DVD release in the entire world (now long out of print) -- and strangely, in Greece! It never obtained wide distribution in the USA, and 20 years later, it doesn't look like it ever will.
Scott Baio produced and appears in a supporting role, as does screenwriter Paul T. Murray, and director Tony Vitale (Kiss Me, Guido), who briefly pops up as another bartender.
